Name some different types of microorganisms
Bacteria and viruses are the most common pathogens for humans. However, some Fungi and Protoctists also cause diseases.
What is the difference between viruses and bacteria?
Once pathogens are in your body they multiply rapidly.
Bacteria divide and often produced toxins, they sometimes damage your cells.
Viruses get inside your cells and damage/ destroy them as they reproduce. The host cells then burst and the viruses are released to infect other cells. Viruses really produce toxins.
When are symptoms of diseases caused?
Symptoms are caused by the toxins and cell damage. They are also caused by the response of your body.
What did Semmelweis do?
He got doctors to wash their hands after handling dead bodies and before seeing pregnant women. This later on started everyone washing their hands in hospitals.
What are some defence mechanisms of the body?
The skin covers your whole body
In the works and hair traps microbes
Tears contain chemicals that kill pathogens
What are infectious diseases caused by?
They are caused by microorganisms called pathogens.
