Health and Development Flashcards
What are the factors of ill health in developing countries?
- Drinking polluted water
- Lack of proper sewage disposal (so the sewage mixes with drinking water).
- Warmer climate attracts more flies and mosquitos which spread disease.
- Poor health care to prevent, treat and cure people
- Poor diet- not eating enough food or not eating a balanced diet
- Poverty- people may not have enough money to eat properly or buy medicines and the whole country may not have enough money for proper sewers, water pipes, and hospitals.
What are the effects of ill-health in developing countries?
- Some are killer diseases e.g. AIDS and malaria
- Some make people very weak and lethargic but are not directly responsible for their deaths, e.g. snail fever and kwashiorkor which trap people in a viscous cycle of disease.
- Some leave their victims with a permanent disability e.g river blindness and rickets which means someone in their community witll have to look after them and it will make t hard for them to find work.
- Most diseases reduce peoples ife expectency
- All disease reduces the rate of development of the country.
How can we improve health in developing countries?
- Produce more food which will reduce diet-deficiency diseases and makes people stronger and less prone to illness.
- Improve health facilities so that everyone has access to medical facilities.
- Provide education on disease prevention.
What causes malaria?
A tiny parasite that finds its way into a person’s bloodstream. A female anopheles mosquito bites someone and the parasites in its stomach multiply. The mosquito then continues to bite others spreading the disease.
What are the symptoms of malaria?
A few days after bite, headaches, stomach pains- fevers of high temperatures and shivering fits ( can occur many times)
What are the factors of good health in developed countries?
Clean environmental conditions
High-quality health facilities
Improved health education
What are the main factors of ill-health in developed countries?
Pollution Social habits (smoking, alcohol, drug abuse) Poor diet Stress Access to Health facilities
What are the main physical factors in the distribution of Malaria?
- Presence of the anopheles mosquito- Temperatures above 16 degrees, still water surfaces
Ideal climate for the FAM- warm and rainy with still or slow-moving water.
What are the main human factors in the distribution of Malaria?
