Migraine headaches

A

Risk factors:
Obesity, female, depression

With aura: CLASSIC
Without aura: COMMON

throbbing pain unilaterally

Migraine drugs

A

Moderate to severe:
Triptans are first line- vasoconstriction, reduce inflammation

Preventative:

  • Antiseizure
  • beta blockers
  • Botox

Cluster headache

A

Most severe primary headache

If repeated, occurs at same time of day or night

Men more affected.

Sharp stabbing intense pain lasting up to 3 hours

Can happen as often as 8x/day

Drug therapy for cluster headaches

A

If symptomatic:
Triptans- don’t use if pt has vascular disease
100% oxygen at 6-8L/min for 10 mins, can be repeated q5min

Preventative:
High dose verapamil
Invasive nerve blocks
Ablative neurosurgical procedures
