How does the compartmentalisation and boundaries in the neck lead to deep neck space infections?
The compartmentalisation leads to spaces between facial planes
Infection or abscess can cause these spaces to distend

Because thyroid gland is attached to the hyoid bone by the pre-tracheal fascia, as the hyoid bone moves up during swallowing so does the thyroid gland

Superficial skin (cyst or abscess) Inflammatory lymph node Congenital lesion (thyroglossal cyst, branchial cyst) Thyroid pathology Primary (lymphoma) Secondary malignant Salivary gland Chronic infections (TB)
