Head and Neck Anatomy Flashcards
Blood supply to head and neck
ECA
What are branches of ECA + mnemonic (inferior to superior)
Some anatomist like freaking out poor medical students Superior thyroid Ascnding pharyngeal Lingual FAcial Occipital Posterior auricular Maxillary Superficial temporal
Does ICA have branches
No
When does CCA bifurcate
At level of superior thyroid cartilage
Carotid sinus - Baro and carotid body (chemoreceptor) lie here
3 salivary glands
Parotid
Submandibular
Sublingual
Nerve supply to tongue
Somatic
Anterior 2/3 = V3 of trigeminal
Posterior 1/3 = glossopharyngeal
Taste
Chordae tympani
Intrinsic
Hypoglossal
What does unilateral hypoglossal palsy cause
Deviation of tongue toward affected side
Topography of neck
1 = under jaw in midline 2/3/4 = going down anterior triangle 5 = posterior triangle 6 = hyoid area
Anterior triangle
Superior = mandible Laterally = SCM Medially = midline
Posterior triangle
Anterior = SCM Posterior = trapeizus Inferior = clavicle
Nerve supply
CN
What is pharynx made up of
Nasopharynx Oropharynx - Palantine tonsils - Uvula in centre - Palantine arches Laryngopharynx - Epiglottis
Oesophagus is final part of laryngopharynx
Trachea = anterior
What do you see if you look with flex-nasa-endoscopy which goes through nose and hangs at soft palate and able to look a larynx
At front you will see epiglottis (at base of tongue)
Vocal cords surround airway
Posterior where oesophagus is
Role of epiglottis
Folds over voice box (larynx) when swallow to prevent food going down wrong way
L recurrent nerve path
From vagus
Aorta on L and subclavian on R
Runs in tracheo-oesophegeal groove
