HEAD AND NECK Flashcards
Head and neck assessment
focuses on:
A. the cranium
B. face, thyroid gland
C. lymph nodes contained within the head and neck.
The framework of the head is the skull, which can be divided into two subsections:
A. the cranium
B. the face
HEAD
houses and protects the brain and major sensory organs. It consists
of eight bones.
CRANIUM
In the adult client, the
cranial bones are joined
together by immovable
sutures:
the sagittal, coronal, squamosal, and lambdoid sutures.
8 cranial bones
1 frontal
2 parietal
1 occipital
1 sphenoid
2 temporal
1 ethmoid
give shape to the face. The face consists of 14 bones
FACIAL BONES
Composed of;
* Muscles
* Ligaments
* cervical vertebrae.
Contained of;
* hyoid bone
* major blood vessels
* Larynx
* Trachea
* thyroid gland
NECK
14 FACIAL BONES
Maxilla (2)
Zygomatic (cheek) (2)
Inferior conchae (2)
Nasal (2)
Lacrimal (2)
Palatine (2)
Vomer (1)
Mandible (jaw) (1)
-are two of the paired muscles that allow movement and provide
support to the head and neck
- Sternocleidomastoid
- Trapezius muscles
are located in the posterior neck and support the cranium.
(C1 through C7)
- filter lymph, a clear substance composed mostly of excess tissue fluid.
*Filtering removes bacteria and tumor cells from lymph
LYMPH NODES
- which can easily be palpated when the neck is flexed
- Using ____as a landmark will help
you locate other vertebrae.
C7
- Lymph nodes produce:
A. lymphocytes
B. antibodies
- Round and has a normal
size of head circumference. - Proportional to the body.
- Frontal, parietal, and
occipital prominences. - Smooth skull contour.
NORMOCEPHALIC
- act as a defense against invasion by foreign substances, assisting with the body’s immunity.
A. lymphocytes
B. antibodies
