HBS Lesson 2.2 Flashcards
1
Q
How does communication happen within the body?
A
- Electrical signals -> Nervous system
* Chemical signals -> Endocrine system
2
Q
What is the basic structure & function of a neuron?
A
- Dendrites - receives the impulse
- Axon - carries signal long distances
- Myelin Sheath - insulate axon
- Nodes of Ranvier - allows nutrients in & waste out, speeds up the signals
- Axon terminals - at the end of axon meets next neuron
- Synapses - space between neurons
- Neurotransmitter - chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with each other
3
Q
How do the different types of neurons work together send & receive signals?
A
- Sensory Neuron - receives signal through senses from PNS to CNS
- Interneuron - connects sensory neurons to motor neuron found in CNS
- Motor neuron receives signal from CNS produces a response CNS to PNS
4
Q
How are electrical impulses created in the human body?
A
- NA+/K+ pump keeps outside membrane + & inside -
- Ions are pumped out of the membrane
- Primes the membrane to carry charges
- Action potential there is a sudden reversal of charge carrying a signal down the axon
5
Q
How can biomedical professionals help treat cure, & improve the quality of life for those suffering from nervous disorders?
A
- Neurologist
- Pharmacists
- Nurses
- Research Scientist
- Brain Surgeons
- Psychiatrists
- Physical or Occupational Therapist
