HBS Lesson 1.1 Flashcards
In what ways do parts of the ñhuman body system work together to carry out a specific function ?
- Chemical level atoms combine to form molecules
- Cellular level cell are made up of molecules
- Tissue level Tissues consist of similar types of cells
- Organ level Organs are made up of different types of tissues
- Organ system level Organ systems consist of different organs that work together closer
- Organismal level Human organisms are made up of many organ systems
In what ways do different human body systems work together to complete a specific function?
• Digestive system
~Takes in nutrient, breaks them down, & eliminates unabsorbed matter (feces)
• Respiratory system
~ Takes in oxygen & eliminates carbon dioxide
• Cardiovascular system
~ Via the blood, distributes oxygen & nutrients to all body cells & delivers wastes & carbon dioxide to disposal organs
•Urinary system
~ Eliminates nitrogen containing wasted & excess ions
• Integumentary system
~ Protects the body as a whole from the external environment
Superior
Toward the head end or upper part of structure or the body; above
Ex. The forehead is superior to the nose
Inferior
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or the body; below
Ex. The naval is inferior to the breastbone
Ventral (Anterior)
Toward or at the front of the body; in front of
Ex. The breastbone is anterior to the spine
Dorsal (Posterior)
Toward or at the backside of the body; behind
Ex. The heart is posterior to the breastbone
Medial
Toward or at the middle of the body; on the inner side of
Ex. The heart is medial to the arm
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
Ex. The arms are lateral to the chest
Intermediate
Between a more medial and a more lateral structure
Ex. The collarbone is intermediate between the breastbone and the shoulder
Proximal
Close to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Ex. The elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk
Ex. The knee is distal to the thigh
Superficial (external)
Toward or at the body surface
Ex. The skin is superficial to the skeleton
Deep (internal)
Away from the body surface; more internal
Ex. The lungs are deep to the rib cage
Abdominal
Stomach
Antecubital
Lower arm
Axillary
Armpit
Brachial
Upper arm
