(ICF) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO)
Provides a standard language and framework for the description of health-related states, switching focus from cause to impact.
Functioning and disability are viewed as a complex interaction between the health condition of the individual and the contextual factors of the environment as well as personal factors. Including:
Problems in body function or structure, difficulty performing activities, discrimination resulting in inability to participate (eg in work or transportation), environmental factors (stairs), and personal factors (self-esteem).
What is physical disability?
An umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.
What is intellectual disability?
Impairments of mental abilities that impact 3 domains:
Conceptual: intellectual limitations in reading, writing, math, reasoning.
Social: Limitations in empathy, social judgement, interpersonal communication.
Practical: Limitations in personal care, job responsibilities, money management, daily activities.
What severity of intellectual disability is most common?
Mild severity (85%, Iq 50-69), moderate (10% Iq 35-49), severe (5% iq<35).
What are the primary health risks of those with intellectual disability
Primary health risks (associated with condition):
Epilepsy Hearing problems Visual problems Mobility problem Mental Health problems Psychosis Alzheimers
What are the secondary health risks of those with intellectual disability
Secondly heath risks (complications):
Obesity Diabetes Fractures Poor oral health Constipation GERD STDs
What is stigma towards disabled?
Labels are placed on the human differences. Labeled people are linked to unwarranted characteristics. Labeled people are viewed os ‘other’. Unpleasant emotional reactions (fear, repulsion, superiority) are felt about the other. Ultimately, the other looses status and suffers discrimination.
Stigma can be felt (negative feelings) or enacted (discrimination).
