Hazards - The Concept Of A Hazard Flashcards
what is a natural hazard?
a natural event that poses a threat to human life and property
what is a natural disaster?
a vulnerable population is exposed to a hazardous event
what does the Deggs model show?
that for a hazardous event to be considered a disaster, there must be vulnerable population
what are the 3 types of hazards?
- geophysical
- atmospheric
- hydrological
what is a geophysical hazard?
hazards caused by land processes, mostly tectonic plates
what is an atmospheric hazard?
conditions created by atmospheric processes
what are hydrological hazards?
the movement of bodies of water
what are 5 factors which can alter hazard perception?
- wealth
- education
- belief
- experience
- mobility
how does wealth alter hazard perception?
wealthier people may feel less vulnerable in a hazard event
how does education alter hazard perception?
people who are more educated know about the full effects of a hazard
how does experience alter hazard perception?
people who have experienced more hazards know more about their effects, so can be more or less scared
how does mobility alter hazard perception?
limited ability/access to escape the event may make people feel more vulnerable than they actually are
how does belief alter hazard perception?
some people may see it as a sign from god, and that they can do nothing about it
what are the 6 human responses to hazards?
- fatalism
- adaptation
- mitigation
- risk sharing
- management
- prediction
prediction
using scientific instruments to predict when the hazard will occur
mitigation
strategies to reduce the impact of the hazard
adaptation
lifestyle changes in order to live with the hazard
management
coordinated strategies
risk sharing
communities working together and therefore sharing their risk
fatalism
see the event as uncontrollable, and let it run its course
what aspects of hazards affect human responses?
- distribution
- instensity
- magnitude
- frequency
- level of development
