Coasts - Sea Level Change Flashcards
what is isostatic change?
the change in the height of the land relative to the sea level
what is isostatic recovery?
melting ice previously on lands reduces its weight and causes the coastline to rise again
what is eustatic change?
- changes in the actual sea level itself
what can cause eustatic change?
- thermal expansion or contraction
- melting ice causes the volume of water in the oceans to increase, and also then the sea levels
what are emergent landforms?
landforms that are created when the land has been raised
give examples of emergent landforms
- raised beaches
what are submergent landforms?
landforms that are created when sea levels rise, or the land falls
give examples of submergent landforms
rias, fjords, dalmation coasts
what is a ria?
a flooded river valley
what is a fjord?
a flooded glacial valley
what are dalmation coasts?
- river valleys parallel to the coast get flooded
- result in a series of long, rugged islands
give an example of a dalmation coast
croatia
how much are sea levels predicted to rise by in 2100?
0.3-1m
what is the issues of rising sea levels on coastal cities?
- will result in the flooding of many of them
