Q

How to interpret the Parks Model?

A

Interpreting the Parks Model:
-Steepness = how quickly an area deteriates then recovers
-Depth = shows the scale of the disaster

Q

What are the three stages of the Parks Model?

A

Three stages of the Parks Model:
-Stage 1 - Relief (immediate local response - aid, foreign aid appeal)
-Stage 2 - Rehabilitation (restoring services , foreign aid, food and water, temporary shelters)
-Stage 3 - Reconstruction (restoring infrastructure and ecosystems, mitigation for future events)

Q

What would more extreme hazards look like on the Parks Model?

A

On the parks model, more extreme hazards will have a steeper curve and a slower recovery time

Q

How to evaluate the effectiveness of Hazard Models?

A

Evaluating effectiveness of Hazard Models:
-Hazards unpredictable so models not entirely useful
-Application to every hazard? Complexity of hazards?
-Aspects of hazards taken into account eg development level, timeframe?
-Are models current? (climate change)

Q

Compare the effectiveness of Parks Model in contrast to the Hazard Management Cycle

A

Parks model:
-Shows the stages and changes in quality of life
-Use of steepness of curves to show extremeness of hazards
-Shows return to normality and quality of life after
-Example = haiti - unprepared to hazard - parks model does not explain their contiued decline after another hazard after 2010 earthquake

Hazard management cycle:
-Focuses on management before and after a hazard
-Less understanding of impact
