What is perception
The way in which an individual or a group views the threat of a hazard event ultimately deciding the course of action taken by individuals
What is fatalism
A view of a hazard event that suggests that people cannot influence or shape the outcome therefore nothing can be done to mitigate against it
What is adaptation
The attempts by people or communities to live with hazard events
What is the most reliable way to gain info about hazards
Education to inform the local pop how to react during emergencies
What factors is perception influenced by
Socio-economic status Level of formal education Occupation/employment status Region, cultural/ethnic background Family and marital status Past experiences Values, personality and expectations
What do economic factors link to
The wealth of an individual or community
How are wealthier countries more prepared for disasters
Infrastructure is more likely to be able to withstand the impact of disaster and the response is likely to be more rapid, well-resourced and better organised
How prepared will people in poverty and deprivation areas be for disasters
They are more likely to feel helpless in the face of a hazard and the response will be slower, less well resources and less well organised
Why are cultural factors important
A persons age, values and religious beliefs can be the determining factor when it comes to leaving behind in an evacuation all that has been worked for in a lifetime
