Distribution, Frequency and Magnitude Flashcards
What is distribution
The special coverage of a hazard. It can refer to the area affected by a single event and also the areas where a particular hazard is likely to occur
Where are events located
Some are very localised while others have a much wider effect e.g. tsunamis
What effect do volcanoes have
A global effect with the spread of dust and consequent short term climatic change
What is frequency
refers to the distribution of a hazard through time and how often an area experiences a hazard.
What hazards are infrequent
Eruption of some volcanoes
What hazards are regular
Tropical storms are more seasonal in their occurrence
What is magnitude
assesses the size of the impact of a hazard.
What scale is used for earthquakes
Richter scale
What scale is used for tropical storms
Saffir- Simpson scale
What scale is used for volcanic eruptions
Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI)
