Hatch Lecture HP Vocab Flashcards
Anesthesia
W/o sensation temporary state of unconsciousness loss of memory pain and includes muscle relaxation
Paresthesia
Sensation of tingling and tickling on persons skin- transient or chronic “pins and needles” “falling asleep” sensation
Formication
Sensation that resembles that of small insects crawling under the skin
Areflexia
Absence of neurologic reflexes such as knee jerk reaction
Nystagmus
Involuntary movement of eyes side to side or up and down in a rapid swinging motion.
Horizontal nystagmus occurs: ETOH, Amphetamines, Barbituates, ketamine, thiamine deficiency
Vertical nystagmus occurs: cerebrellar ataxia, MS, CVA, Tumors, Phenytoin toxicity
Clonus
Muscular spasms involving rhythmic contractions
Causes: CVA, MS, Spinal cord damage, hepatic encephalopathies
Anosmia
Loss of smell
Hypochondriasis
An overwhelming fear that you have a serious disease even though the health care providers can find no evidence of illness
CVA
Sudden death of brain tissue d/t lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain
Types: Ischemic versus hemorrhagic more likely Ischemic
TIA
A Mini Stroke Produces similar sx that a stroke but does not have sequela and does not have lasting permanent damage - resolves in 24 hours.
Patient Education: Having a TIA puts the patient at higher risk for a true stoke, this is a good time to discuss lifestyle changes. TIA can serve as a warning and an opportunity to take steps to prevent a stroke.
Ataxia
Difficulty with gait
Diplopia
Double vision
Dysarthria
Difficulty forming words
Postitcal
Recovery period following seizure activity period varies in duration
Vertigo
Perception of the environment spinning around you
Dizziness
Lightheaded, faint, nearly passing out
Aniscoria
Difference greater than 0.4 mm in diameter of one pupil compared to the other can be considered a nml variant
Tremors
Resting: muscle is relaxed, mostly in hands and in Parkinson’s disease “pill rolling”
Action: voluntary muscle movement- purposeful movement toward target
Dermatome
Area of skin that is mainly supplied by a single spinal nerve 8 cervical nerves C1- not associated w/ dermatome 12 thoracic nerves 5 lumbar nerves 5 sacral nerves
ON OCCASION OUR TRUSTY TRUCK ACTS FUNNY VERY GOOD VEHICLE ANY HOW
CRANIAL NERVES
OLFACTORY OPTIC OCULOMOTOR TROCHLEAR TRIGEMINAL ABDUCENS FACIAL VESTIBULARCHOCLEAR GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL VAGUS ACCESSORY HYPOGLOSSAL
Cranial nerves continued. Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter More
But means both for the trigeminal nerve
Vertigo
Presence of nystagmus or focal neurological signs diplopia-ataxia-dysarthria
Mental Status
Asses body language, affects, hygiene, emotions Orientation Name Date/time Location Reasoning “if a fire started ? What would you do?” Simple math Complex word world
Cerebellar test
Rapid alternating hands, finger to thumb, finger to nose, toe tapping, heels to shin
