  1. the normans (william) used the feigned retreat, when a rumour is spread that william was dead.This made the fryds leave the anglos (harolds) shield wall.
  2. the anglos were tired from the battles fought in the south and their rapid journey from the south.
  3. harolds army was mostly fyrd who are less equipped than the housecard so it was easier to defeat them

mid-september tostig and hardrada sail and on 20th sep 1066 they defeat Edwin and Morcar, because they were outnumbered and Hardrada had better strategies

  2. tostig thought they were exchanging hostages so their army wasnt wearing armour
