What is the efficiency of cable clamps?
Below 1 inch - 80%
1 inch and above - 90%
What is the rule of thumb formula for number of clips?
Number of wire rope clips=the diameter of the rope x 3 + 1 to the next whole number
What are the five steps for proper U bolt clip installation?
- Place first clip on width from dead end of rope, U bolt over dead end, tighten bolts evenly to recommended torque
- Apply second clip nearest eye as possible, U bolt over dead end, smug bolts but DO NOT tighten
- Evenly space remaining clips between the first two
- Tightened all nuts to recommended torque, apply tension
- Recheck but torque after rope has been in use, reapply tension

What are some of the rules for proper shackle use?
- Always use a cotter pin when required
- Use proper pin, never replace with a bolt
- Never use a screw pin shackles if the pin can roll under load
- Shackle pins are:
1/16” larger than bow sizes up to 1/16”
1/8” larger than bow sizes 1/2 to 1 5/8”
1/4” larger than the bow sizes 1 3/4” and over - Generally shackles are meant for inline pulls
- Larger si3 should be used when lifting a load with two slings spread out at wide angles
- The pin of the shackle is hung on the hook, loads are placed in the anchor part of the shackle
- Washers can be used as spacers to keep shackle hanging openly
What are OSHA regulations for hook inspections
Maximum shank stretch 5%
Maximum body stretch 10%
Maximum throat section wear 10%
Maximum twist or bend 10 degrees
