Handpiece safety Flashcards
what are the 3 safety checks?
back cap does not rotate anti-clockwise
bur resists pulling force after placement in chuck
hand-piece fits couplings and resists applied tension
what are the 3 fit for use checks?
bur rotates freely in device
bur does not move laterally
consistent sound when operated and no lateral movement of bur
what speed does a high speed run?
250,000 to 400,000 rpm
4000-6000 cycles per second
who is responsible for device safety?
the device user
what is the safety protocol during use?
recognise changes in behaviour and report/change device
what faults can be visually recognised?
expiry date on sterilisation pouch
obvious dents and damage
what are the types of safety checks?
safe to use and fit for use
what will frictional resistance cause?
overheating during use
what will affect control and device performance?
too much lateral movement
components wear gradually over time too
how do you check dental Handpiece performance?
run device for 5 sec and entire it sounds right and bur does not wobble
what do you do when you find/suspect a fault?
inform a dental nurse who will fill out a Handpiece fault report - change device and check again
how many devices in GDHS need repairing annually?
200-300
how many devices were found to be faulty in an audit?
6%
