handout 9 Flashcards
rationalism
truth defined by reasoning, not based on evidence
*primary source of knowledge.
a priori
prior to expirience… born with it(innate) Born with understanding when you know ( not born with all knowledge, but ability to understand). “I think therefore I am” That is how he proves we ourselves exist
Coherence theory of truth
a truth test where ideas are evaluated based on established truths that are clear and distinct.
Clarity
that which is present and apparent to the mind
distinctness
that which is so precise and differnet from all other objects that it contains nothing but what is clear
Method of doubt
doubt everything that you can possibly doubt … what is left is the truth which is clearly and distinctly understood
- How do I know that I am not now dreaming?
- Evil Genius ( how do I know that I am not being controlled by an evil genius)
proof of God (ontological argument)
we cannot make up a perfect being in our head cause we are imperfect. if we made him up it would be a better version of yourself.
knowledge
has universal language . born with it
2 basic arguments
- now dreaming ( reality is not the external world, just imagination
- evil genuis (god
Mind Body Problem with dualism
he describes himself as having a body and a mind, but the body is not innate nor known to be true with deductive reasononing.
Cartesian Circle (critique)
(1) Iclearly understand the concept of god
2) god gives the clear and distinct understanding
It just goes in a circle.like what came first chicken or the egg?
wrote meditations 7
begin at genisis (beginning and basic and confidence) end at rest and complete knowledge
cogito ergo sum
“It think therefore I am.”
God
does he exist and is he a deceiver. Concept of god is perfect. if perfect he cannot be a deciever
