News value that stresses when an event occurred
Above the fold
a term used to refer to prominent story; it comes from placement of a news story in a broadsheet newspaper above the fold in the middle of the front page
Breaking news
an ongoing news story that requires frequent updating
Broadsheet
standard sized newspaper, which is generally 17 by 22 inches
Chains
Corporations that control a significant number of newspapers and other media outlets
Covers
Songs recorded by someone other than the original artist. In the 1950’s it was common for white musicians to “ cover” songs originally played by black artists
Coverlines
Teaser headlines on magazine covers used to shock or intrigue potential buyers
Golden Age of Radio
A period from the late 1920’s until the 1940’s, during which radio was the dominate medium for home entertainment
Media Literacy
Audience members’ understanding of the media industry’s operation, the messages delivered by the media, the roles media play in society, and how audience members respond to these media and their messages
Mobisodes
Short video episodes designed to be viewed on the small screens of mobile phones or personal digital assistants. These can be brief entertainment, news or commercial programs
Race Records
A term used by the recording industry prior to 1949 referring to recording by popular black artists. It was later replaced by more racially neutral terms such as R&B, soul, or urban contemporary
Scoop
A news story that a news organization reports well ahead of its competitors
Sensationalism
News coverage that panders to audiences with lurid and highly emotional accounts of crime, sex, violence, or celebrity missteps
Sweeps
the four times during the year that Nielsen Media Research measures the size of television station audiences
Vanity Press
Companies that print books and distribute books with the author paying all costs ( self-publishing)
Zoned Coverage
When a newspaper targets news coverage or advertisements to a specified region of a city or market
Benjamin Day
Publisher of the New York Sun, he ushered in the era of the penny press
George Melies
An early French filmmaker who pioneered the use of special effects in film in order to show imaginative stories
Ida B. Wells
A female African American journalist in the later 19th century who wrote and fought against racism and black lynching
James Gordon Bennett
Founder of the New York Herald, started many features found in modern newspapers including a financial page, editorial commentary and public affairs reporting
Mary Shadd Cary
The first African American women to edit a weekly newspaper. She founded and edited the Provincial Freeman in Canada

A famous photographer of the 19th century who took portraits of many well-known people of his day, as well as Civil War battlefield photos
