How do you drive defensively?
Look for danger, anticipate other drivers, and be cautious when approaching intersections.
What should you do if a crash is unavoidable?
Swerve off the road, drive off the road, hit something not moving, hit a vehicle moving in the same direction as you, and/or hit a soft object (e.g. hedge)
How do you avoid rear-end collisions?
Keep at least four seconds following distance
What should you do if your vehicle breaks down?
Move the vehicle so all four wheels are out of traffic, park where car can be seen 200ft in each direction, turn on hazard lights, get all passengers out on side away from traffic, call 347
What should you do if your vehicle approaches your lane?
Sound horn and flash high beams, brake hard, and steer to the side of the road
What should you do if your right wheels off pavement?
Take your foot off the gas pedal, hold the wheel firmly and steer in a straight line, break lightly, wait until road is clear
What is overcorrection?
Excessive steering in reaction to an event or loss of control of a vehicle
What to do if you’re overcorrecting?
Stay calm, hold the wheel firmly, take foot off the gas, steer car where desired, steer car to a safe place and stop
What do if skidding or hydroplaning?
Take foot off gas pedal, do not use brakes, turn front tires in the direction you want to go
