What is the policy according to VPM in regards to Handcuffing?
“Any person arrested or taken into custody should be handcuffed if it is reasonably believed to be necessary in the circumstances.”
How are handcuffs carried?
They are carried on the reaction side.
What is the position of handcuffs?
Handcuffs are to be kept in the “ready” or ratchet position.
Where should handcuffs be placed?
Handcuffs should be placed on the subject’s wrists between the knuckle bones of the wrist (carpus) and the hand (metacarpus).
How tight should handcuffs be?
You should be able to fit the tip of your index finger between the wrist and the handcuff strands on the top and bottom.
How should handcuffs be locked?
utilise the double lock to lock the strand in place once sufficiently tight.
What are the control options for handcuffing?
- subject looks away
- subjects feet are moved apart
- subjects toes are pointed out
- subject kneels
- subjects ankles may be crossed
