HAND TOOLS Flashcards
is a fastening tool used to secure screws or bolts.
HAND DRILL
are used in conjunction with hand drills or drill presses to make holes in woods, plastic, and metals.
DRILL BITS
is a tool used for boring holes. In most braces, immediately behind the chuck is a three position gear release which allows ratcheting of the handle when in tight spots.
RATCHET BRACE
is a tool used for drilling different sizes of big holes in wood to meet different working demands.
EXPANSIVE BIT
is more often used by the woodworker to bore holes than any other type of bit. It consists of four main parts: the cutting end, the twist, the shank, and the tang.
AUGER BIT
are used in metalworking to provide a starting hole for a larger sized drill bit, or a conical indentation in the end of a work piece to mount a lathe center.
CENTER BIT
is a particular type of drill bit that is often used in furniture making and other woodworking projects.
FORSTNER BIT
is a saw blade of annular (ring) shape, whose annular kerf creates a hole in the workpiece without having to cut up the core material.
HOLE SAW
is toll used Fluted countersinks come in several sizes, able to cut conical holes intended to fit screws of varying head dimensions.
COUNTERSINK
is a tool suitable for pounding nails.
CLAW HAMMER
suitable for driving metal to extend the size.
BALL PEEN HAMMER
a hand tool used for driving screws.
SCREWDRIVER
usually used in carpentry to knock wooden pieces together, or to drive dowels or chisels.
WOODEN MALLET
a small woodworking hand plane which typically has the iron bedded at a lower angle than other planes, with the bevel up. use to cut end grain and chamfer
CHAMFERING PLANE
a hand plane designed for cutting rebates in wood.
RABBETING PLANE
same construction as the above mentioned planes but it is shorter being 51/2 to 10 inches in length, and has a plane iron of 11/4 to 2 inches wide.
SMOOTH PLANE
most useful all around the plane in the woodworking kit. It is 14 to 15 inches long and has a plane iron of 2 to 21/4 inches wide.
JACK PLANE
22 to 24 inches long and has a plane iron of 23/8 to 25/8 inches wide.
JOINTER PLANE
18 inches long and has a plane iron of 23/8 inches wide.
FORE PLANE
is a tool used to shape and smooth wooden rods and shafts - often for use as wheel spokes, chair legs, self bows, and arrows.
SPOKESHAVE
range from small hand tools for tiny details, to large chisels used to remove big sections of wood, in ‘roughing out’ the shape of a pattern or design.
WOODWORKING CHISELS
comes with a slender blade designed for cutting in small spaces and clearing channels or grooves
PAIRING CHISEL
used for mortising square holes in wood to accept tenons, this strong, rigid tool has a thick blade with 90° sides with a small taper.
MORTISE CHISEL
are short chisels that are designed to rest easily in the ball of the hand.
BUTT CHISEL
is a single-handed striking tool with a sharp blade used to cut and split wood.
HATCHET
the screw part they are shaped like an uppercase letter G. Used to hold two pieces of work together temporarily.
C-CLAMP
consists of the bar, the head jaw, the sliding jaw, and the screw. The head has a threaded shaft which passes through the head casting.
BAR CLAMP
is a customized work holding device used to position and hold a workpiece while guiding the location of the cutting tool.
JIG CLAMP
has two jaws: a shoulder jaw and a screw jaw; and two spindles: an outside spindle and a middle spindle. The hand-screw is adjustable to an angle.
HAND SCREW
The name comes from its “F” shape.
F-CLAMP
designed to hold miter joints together.
MITER CLAMP
hand tool used to hold objects firmly, for bending, or physical compression.
PLIERS
used when working with electricity and making electrical connections.
ELECTRICAL PLIERS
have a variety of uses, such as gripping, reaching places not readily accessible to the fingers, holding wires, bending loops, attaching wires to terminals and punching, and skinning and splicing small wires.
LONG NOSE PLIERS
are typically machined from forged steel.
COMBINATION PLIERS
are used for gripping, wire splicing, wire cutting, insulation stripping, and (by using the heel) for crushing insulation.
SIDE CUTTING PLIERS
is a very handy tool for holding things in place while you do other things to it like sand, buff or grind.
QUICK ACTING VISE
used in woodworking and metalworking to mark out lines for cutting or other operations.
MARKING GAUGE
woodworking layout and point-making tool in screwing. It is used to scribe a line to be followed by a hand saw or chisel when making woodworking joints and make a point for easy start of screwing and other operations.
SCRATCH AWL
A sharp knife used for scoring marks for joinery.
MARKING KNIFE
woodworking tool used for marking straight lines on a board or on a solid wood for cutting.
LINING TOOLS
a tool used for measuring dimensions on a job.
TAPE RULE/STEEL TAPE
a measuring instrument consisting of an L-shaped frame with a linear scale along its longer arm and an L-shaped sliding attachment with a vernier, used to read directly the dimension of an object represented by the separation between the inner or outer edges of the two shorter arms.
VENIER CALIPER
is a precision device that is designed to take accurate external measurements of different objects.
OUTSIDE CALIPER
a measuring instrument which is used to gauge internal dimensions, such as the internal diameter of a pipe.
INSIDE CALIPER
is a tool used for lay-outing 90 degree and 45 degree angle.
COMBINATION SQUARE
a tool used for lay-outing any degree angle.
SLIDING T-BEVEL
tool used for lay-outing 90 degree angles.
TRY SQUARE
saw used for cutting curves and circles.
COMPASS SAW
like a compass saw which is used for cutting curves and circles.
KEYHOLE SAW
Ideal tool used for cutting wood joints.
BACK SAW
tool used for cutting wood design.
COPING SAW
a tool used for cutting across the grain of wood.
CROSSCUT SAW
tool used for cutting along the grain of wood.
RIP SAW
used for making dovetail joints on furniture.
DOVETAIL SAW
tool used for cutting metal. It has a blade around 12mm wide.
HACK SAW
is a tool used for setting nails below the wood surface. It is made of alloy steel. We can also fabricate our own nail set by shaping concrete nails.
NAIL SET
is a tool used for sharpening edge cutting tools.
SHARPENING STONE
