HAND TOOLS Flashcards
is a fastening tool used to secure screws or bolts.
HAND DRILL
are used in conjunction with hand drills or drill presses to make holes in woods, plastic, and metals.
DRILL BITS
is a tool used for boring holes. In most braces, immediately behind the chuck is a three position gear release which allows ratcheting of the handle when in tight spots.
RATCHET BRACE
is a tool used for drilling different sizes of big holes in wood to meet different working demands.
EXPANSIVE BIT
is more often used by the woodworker to bore holes than any other type of bit. It consists of four main parts: the cutting end, the twist, the shank, and the tang.
AUGER BIT
are used in metalworking to provide a starting hole for a larger sized drill bit, or a conical indentation in the end of a work piece to mount a lathe center.
CENTER BIT
is a particular type of drill bit that is often used in furniture making and other woodworking projects.
FORSTNER BIT
is a saw blade of annular (ring) shape, whose annular kerf creates a hole in the workpiece without having to cut up the core material.
HOLE SAW
is toll used Fluted countersinks come in several sizes, able to cut conical holes intended to fit screws of varying head dimensions.
COUNTERSINK
is a tool suitable for pounding nails.
CLAW HAMMER
suitable for driving metal to extend the size.
BALL PEEN HAMMER
a hand tool used for driving screws.
SCREWDRIVER
usually used in carpentry to knock wooden pieces together, or to drive dowels or chisels.
WOODEN MALLET
a small woodworking hand plane which typically has the iron bedded at a lower angle than other planes, with the bevel up. use to cut end grain and chamfer
CHAMFERING PLANE
a hand plane designed for cutting rebates in wood.
RABBETING PLANE
same construction as the above mentioned planes but it is shorter being 51/2 to 10 inches in length, and has a plane iron of 11/4 to 2 inches wide.
SMOOTH PLANE
most useful all around the plane in the woodworking kit. It is 14 to 15 inches long and has a plane iron of 2 to 21/4 inches wide.
JACK PLANE
22 to 24 inches long and has a plane iron of 23/8 to 25/8 inches wide.
JOINTER PLANE
18 inches long and has a plane iron of 23/8 inches wide.
FORE PLANE
is a tool used to shape and smooth wooden rods and shafts - often for use as wheel spokes, chair legs, self bows, and arrows.
SPOKESHAVE
range from small hand tools for tiny details, to large chisels used to remove big sections of wood, in ‘roughing out’ the shape of a pattern or design.
WOODWORKING CHISELS
comes with a slender blade designed for cutting in small spaces and clearing channels or grooves
PAIRING CHISEL
used for mortising square holes in wood to accept tenons, this strong, rigid tool has a thick blade with 90° sides with a small taper.
MORTISE CHISEL
