Hand Flashcards
Finger Flexion
Curling fingers down toward palm
Finger Extension
Straightening fingers
Abduction and Adduction of fingers
Defined in reference to middle digit (3)
Abduction = spreading fingers away
Adduction = spreading fingers towards
Thumb Flexion
Curling thumb towards palm
Thumb Extension
Straightening thumb
Thumb abduction
Moving thumb anteriorly away from fingers
Thumb adduction
Moving thumb back towards the fingers (posteriorly)
Thumb Oppostiion
Moving tip of thumb to touch finger tips
Complex movement
Involves flexion, abduction and adduction and rotation of MC1
Anterior Compartments of the Hand
Thenar
Hypothenar
Thenar compartment
Functio
Innervation
Function = flexion, abduction, opposition Innervation = Recurrent branch of the median nerve
Hypothenar compartment
Function
Innervation
Function = flexion, opposition, and abduction of 5th digit Innervation = deep branch of ulnar nerve
Posterior compartment of the hand
All extensor muscles of the hand are extrinsic!
All intrinsic muscles of the hand arw
anterior
Thenar muscles
Mobilize the thumb Innervated by recurrent of median Abductor Pollicis Brevis Flexor Pollicis Brevis (deep head by deep branch of ulnar) Opponens Pollicis
Hypothenar Muscles
Innervated by deep branch of ulnar
Abductor Digiti Minimi
Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis
Opponens Digiti Minimi
Lumbricals
Flex MCP joint
Extend IP joint
Lateral 2 innervated by median
Medial 2 innervated b deep branch of ulnar
All other hand muscles..
Innervated by deep branch of ulnar
Dorsal interossei = DAB
Palmar interossei = PAD
Adductor Pollicis = NOT A THENAR MUSCLE
Ulnar Nerve Compression in the Ulnar Canal
Numbness, parasthesia of medial 1 1/2 digits and/or weakness of the intrinsic hand muscles
Ulnar Nerve Laceration in the ulnar canal
Loss of cutaneous innervation to the medial 1 1/2 digits, loss of innervation of intrinsic hand muscles
Loss of lumbricals = clawing of 4 and 5, wasting of 1st DAB
Long flexors remain intact
Median Nerve compression in carpal tunnel
Numbness.parasthesia of lateral 3 1/2 digits and/or weakness of muscles in thenar eminence
Median Nerve Laceration in carpal tunnel
Loss of cutaneous innervation to hand
Loss of lumbricals = clawing of 2 and 3, Wasting of thenar eminence
Long flexors remin intact
Recurrent branch of median nerve
Loss of thenar muscles only = ape hand
THumb is adducted and laterally rotated
Carpal Tunnel
btw carpals posteriorly
flexor retinaculum anteriorly
Contains median nerve and tendons of FDS (4) and FDP (4) and flexor pollicis longus (1)
Anatomical Snuffbox
Triangular fossa on lateral dorsum of hand
Lateral (ant) = tendons of abductor pollicis longus and ext pollicis brevis
Medial (post) = tendon of extensor pollicis long
Contains the radial artery
