Mechanism of Action
Mesolimbic D1/D2 antagonist> depresses release of hypothalmic and hypophyseal hormones, depresses the reticular activating system, thus affecting basal metabolism, body temp, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis

Onset - 30-45min
Peak - 10-20min
Duration - Varies
Half life - 3-35hrs
Indications
Acute psychotic espisode
Contraindications
CNS depression
Agitation secondary to shock or hypoxia
Side effects
EPS, insomnia, restlessness, drowsiness, seizures, dry mouth, constipation, respiratory depression, tachycardia, hypotension, prolonged QT syndrome, torsades
Dose
Adult- 5mg IM q 4-8hr PRN
PEDI- 1-3mg IM q 4-8hr PRN max 0.15 mg/kg/day
Precautions
May impair physical and mental abilities, may cause orthostatic hypotension, may cause EPS or dystonic reactions
Drug-Drug
Caution in pts taking Lithium, may cause encephalopathic syndrome ( irreversible brain damage)
May increase chance of hypotension when taken with antihypertensives
Additive effects with depressants and other antipsychotics- increased CNS depression
