Halogens and Transition metals Flashcards
Group 7
The Halogens - react in a similar way
7 electrons
in outer shell
Reactivity - 4 bullet points
- reactivity decreases down the group
- there are MORE ELECTRON SHELLS/ outer electron shell is FURTHER AWAY FROM THE NUCLEUS
- the attraction between the nucleus and the outer electron shell is WEAKER
- so electron is LESS EASILY GAINED down the group
Chlorine colour, state at room temp, colour in water & oil
pale Green
Gas
Colourless
Colourless
Bromine colour, state at room temp, colour in water & oil
brown
liquid
orange-brown
orange
Iodine colour, state at room temp, colour in water & oil
grey-black
solid
water: brown
oil: purple
physical properties of group VII:
colour, state at room temp, colour in water & oil, density
down the group colour: darker state: increase in melting point colour in H2O & oil: darker density: decreases
predict astatine
black & solid
What are halides?
The ions of halogen atoms when they gain an electron
What colour are all halide salts?
All of the halide salts are colourless
Displacement reaction (2)
- when a more reactive element replaces
- a less reactive element in a COMPOUND
state 2 uses of argon
- inert atmosphere for welding
- electric light bulbs
- advertising signs
state use of helium
- filling balloons = less dense than air and does not burn
state common use of neon, argon and xenon
advertising signs
give 3 different properties of transition metals which are not typical of other metals (3)
(good) catalysts;
variable oxidation numbers;
form coloured compounds / coloured ions;
