Group I: Alkalis Flashcards
1
Q
What are group 1 metals are called
A
Alkali metals
2
Q
What is produced when group 1 metals react with water?
A
alkali + water ➝ metal hydroxide + hydrogen
3
Q
Why do group 1 metals react similarly?
A
They react in similar way as THEY HAVE 1 ELECTRON IN THEIR OUTER SHELL
4
Q
What are observations when lithium reacts with water?
A
floats, bubbles, dissolves
5
Q
Reactivity of group I with water (6 marks)
A
Reactivity INCREASES down the group
- electron is FURTHER AWAY FROM THE POSITIVE NUCLEUS.
- there’re more ELECTRON SHELLS
- so, greater ELECTRON SHIELDING
- WEAKER attraction between the nucleus and outer electron
- so electron is MORE EASILY LOST (forming a 1+ ion)
6
Q
physical properties of group I:
melting point
density
reactivity with water
A
down the group
- melting point DECREASES
- density: INCREASES
- reactivity with water: INCREASES
