Q

Reactivity of group I with water (6 marks)

A

Reactivity INCREASES down the group

  • electron is FURTHER AWAY FROM THE POSITIVE NUCLEUS.
  • there’re more ELECTRON SHELLS
  • so, greater ELECTRON SHIELDING
  • WEAKER attraction between the nucleus and outer electron
  • so electron is MORE EASILY LOST (forming a 1+ ion)

Q

physical properties of group I:
melting point
density
reactivity with water

A

down the group

  • melting point DECREASES
  • density: INCREASES
  • reactivity with water: INCREASES
