INSTRUMENTAL
When a child uses language to express their needs

E.g. david (aged 14 months) points to fridge door and says “door” - wants a yoghurt
REGULATORY
Language is used to tell others what to do
“Do as i tell you function”
Miriam says “daddy push” telling her father to push her on the swing
INTERACTIONAL
Make contact with others and form friendships
“Hello” said catherine- holding out her doll
PERSONAL
Used to express feelings, opinions and individual identity
E.g. “andrews room beware keep out” - sign on andrews door
HEURISTIC
Is used to gain knowledge, learn hows and whys
E.g. John aged 4, “why dont stars fall out of the sky”
IMAGINATIVE
To tell stories and jokes, creating stories, songs, jokes, rhymes, role play
E.g. im he man (role play with brad)
INFORMATIVE
Language is used to communicate information and express propostions e.g. recalling retelling reporting stating affirming describing answering negating etc
E.g “ i got four barbie dolls at my bday party”
