Half Term 2 Test Flashcards
What is an element
A substances made of one type of atom
What is a compound
A substance made of one or more type of atoms chemically bonded together
What is a mixture
Two substances mixed together (not chemically bonded)
What is a native metal
A metal that is found pure (eg. Gold)
What is a metal ore
Naturally occurring rocks which contain metals or metal compounds in sufficient amounts to make it worthwhile extracting thrm
How are metals extracted from their ores by heating it with carbon
If a metal is less reactive than carbon, it can be extracted from its oxide by using heat with carbon. This is a reduction reaction where the metal oxide is displaced by the carbon, while under heat(as a catalyst), to leave the pure metal and carbon dioxide.
What is a reduction oxidation reaction (redox)
Where a metal has its oxide removed in a reaction. (Reducing it)
Eg) copper oxide + carbon -> copper + carbon dioxide
What is the reactivity series
A scale of how reactive a metal is compared to other metals, higher it is on the scale the more reactive it is
List the reactivity series
look in book
Show a displacement reaction and explain what happens
eg) copper sulphate + magnesium -> magnesium sulphate + copper
The more reactive metal takes the less reactive metals thing
In a displacement reaction, the more difference there is between the 2 metals in the reactivity series, the more ….
Vigourous the reaction is
The higher the element is on the reactivity series, the more often, it will be found.. because..
Pure, it reacts less often with other things like oxygen
What is a catalyst
Something used to speed up a reaction
Eg) heat
What is oxidation
Reaction of other elements with oxygen
Combustion is
Burning fuel in oxygen
