Haiti Under France
Haiti was the French colony of Saint Domingue. Saint- Domingue was the richest colony. The slaves in Africa were doing the plantations for the French owners. Haiti had ruins of warfare for years.
The Spark of the Revolution
In 1971 petite french blancs tried to seize Port au Prince which sparked the revolution.
Haitian Revolution Phase 1
Initial revolt against the French in 1791 to free the slaves and overthrow the French Regime. Main leader was Toussaint L’ouveture. The first revolt ended when the slaves were freed, but Haiti was still a French colony.
Toussaint L’ouverture
Haitian General who negotiated the freedom of Haitian slaves from France. Wasn’t popular among the Haitian people since he still wanted the freed slaves to produce sugar under France and considered himself a French citizen.
Haitian Revolution Phase 2
The second revolt started in 1802 when Napoleon tried to reinstate slavery. This revolt was led by Dessalines since L’ouveture had been captured by the French. Haiti won and declared independence in 1804.
Jean-Jacques Dessalines
He was one of L’Overture’s generals and himself a former slave. He led the revolutionaries at the Battle of Vertieres on November 18, 1803 where the French forces were defeated.
Haitian Independence
After the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s colonial forces, Jean-Jacques Dessalines led the revolutionaries at the Battle of Vertieres on November 18, 1803, where the French forces were defeated. He then renamed it Haiti. Official Haitian Independence day started in 1804, January 1st.
