Haemopoiesis Flashcards
Where are the main sites of haemopoiesis
In the bone marrow of:
Pelvis, Sternum, Skull, Ribs and Vertebrae
What are the five major lineage pathways that arise from haemopoietic stem cells
Thrombopoiesis
Granulopoiesis
Monocytopoiesis
Lymphopoiesis
Erthyropoiesis
What is thrombopoiesis
Formation of platelets involved in blot formation
Platelets are essentially membrane bound fragments of cytoplasm that bud off of megakaryocytes.
Megakaryocyte formation is driven by thrombopoietin
What is granulopoiesis and what cells does it produce
Process to produce granulocytes- basophils, neutrophils, eosinophils
Myeloblast cells differentiate into these cell types
What is monocytopoiesis
The production of monocytes from myeloblast cells
Monocytes then differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells when they enter tissues
What is lymphopoiesis and explain how the two types of lymphocytes are formed
Production of B and T lymphocytes from common lymphoid progenitor cells
B lymphocyte production begins in the foetal liver and bone marrow with immunoglobulin genes rearranging during development to allow from production of antibodies
T lymphocyte production begins in the foetal liver and then the T lymphocyte progenitors migrate to the thymus early in gestation
