A
Thrombosis of small blood vessels

Triggers for HUS
A
Bacterial toxin shiga from E.coli but also from shigella

What can predispose to HUS
A
Antibiotics and antimotility drugs

Classic triad of HUS
A
Haemolytic anaemia, AKI, low platelet count (from thrombocytopenia)

Typical presentation of HUS
A
Brief gastroenteritis, 5 days later symptoms of HUS, with decreased urine output, haematuria, abdominal pain, lethargy, irritability, confusion, HTN, bruising

Management of HUS
A
Medical emergency but is self-limiting.
Anti-HTNs, blood transfusion and haemolysis

Prognosis of HUS
A
70-80% make full recovery
