haemoglobinopathies Flashcards
What is haemoglobinopathies?
genetic condition that effects haemoglobin
What happens as a result of haemoglobinopathies?
a change in structure and quality of haemoglobin
what type of anaemia can haemoglobinopathies result in?
haemolytic
what deficiencies occur as a result of haemoglobinopathies?
- thalassemia
- sickle cell
- G6PD
What is thalassemia?
the synthesis of a or b chains in haemoglobin are reduced or non-existent
What causes alpha-thalassemia?
alpha globin gene deletion
what are the symptoms of alpha-thalassemia?
- anaemia (not always)
- jaundice
-englarged spleen
malnourishment
How many types of B thalassemia are there?
3 types:
- beta - thalassemia minor
- beta - thalassemia major
- beta thalassemia intermedia
What does a b thalassemia blood film show?
codocytes (target cells)
What is sickle cell anaemia?
a genetic disease of the red blood cells
What happens as a result of sickle cell anaemia?
abnormal haemoglobin HbS
what causes sickle cell anaemia?
a point mutation in the haemoglobin beta gene
How is the DNA sequence altered in sickle cell patients?
adenine > thymine then glutamic acid to valine
By what age does the haemoglobin switch occur?
6 months
