haemoglobin as a buffer and the Bohr effect Flashcards
What does a buffer do?
Resist change in the ph
What acts as a buffer?
Haemoglobin
What is haemoglobin also affected by?
Partial pressure of carbon dioxide
What does carbon dioxide dissolve in?
Plasma of red blood cell
Where is the carbon dioxide from?
Respiration
What is the the 1st reaction with carbon dioxide?
Carbon droxide + water = carbonic acid
What is the 2nd reaction?
Carbonic acid →(splits into) hydrogen ions + hydrogen carbonate ion
What takes in the hydrogen ion?
Haemoglobin
What happens to the haemoglobin when it absorbs the hydrogen ion?
The shape is altered
What is the Bohr effect?
Carbon dioxide forces the release of oxygen
How does the haemoglabin know how much oxygen to release?
Due to the partial pressure
What is affinity controlled by?
- Partial pressure of:
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
What does low affinity equal?
Low saturation
What does high affinity equal?
High saturation
What causes high co2?
High rate of respiration
