Haemodynamic Disorders Flashcards
What are the three main causes of thrombus formation
Endothelial injury
Abnormal blood flow
Hyper-coagulability
Types of arterial thrombi
Mural thrombus = attached to blood vessel and doesn’t really block vessel
Occlusive thrombus = tends to occlude vessels and process is driven by platelets
How does a plaque form
Formation of the fatty streak. Endothelial dysfunction allows accumulation of lipids. This results in leukocyte recruitment and formation of foam cells
Foam cells die and formation of lipid rich necrotic core occurs which continues to grow and is encapsulated by a fibrous cap
Plaque might rupture = thrombogenic potential
Complications of atherosclerosis
Coronary artery disease
Carotid artery’s disease
Peripheral artery disease
- Chronic kidney disease
Aneurysm
