Haematopoiesis Flashcards
1
Q
Define hematopoiesis
A
The production of mature blood cells from haematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow
2
Q
List the white blood cells:
A
- Neutrophil
Disposable phagocyte - Eosinophil
Allergic reactions - Basophil
Releases inflammatory mediators - Monocyte > Macrophage
- Lymphocytes (B and T cells)
Adaptive immunity
3
Q
List the growth factors required for differentiation into:
- Erythrocytes
- Platelets
- WBCs
A
- Erythropoietin
- Thrombopoietin
- Interleukins
4
Q
What are the features of a red blood cell?
A
- Biconcave disc
- No nucleus / mitochondria (max space)
- Contains Haemoglobin
- Flexible
5
Q
What is the function of platelets?
A
- Coagulation
- Haemophilia = lack clotting factor cascade
6
Q
What are the cause and symptoms of thalasseamia?
A
- Gene mutation coding for haemoglobin
- Not enough red cells produced
- Requires transfusions
7
Q
What are the cause and symptoms of sickle cell anaemia?
A
- Gene mutation
- Haemoglobin form crystals / change shape
- Cells get stuck in capillaries
- Tissues O2 deprived > ischaemia / pain
