Haematology is the study of blood and blood cellular elements.

What is haematopoiesis?
A
Haematopoiesis refers to the formation of blood cells.

What is blood composed of?
A
- Red Blood Cells
- White Blood Cells
- Platelets
- Plasma

What is blood plasma?
A
- The yellow fluid that contains all the blood cells.
- Composed of 90% H2O.
- Other 10% (Electrolytes, Hormones, etc.)
- Major Components: Albumin and Globulin.

What is haemostasis?
A
The process of stopping bleeding

What are red blood cells?
A
- Cells that carry antigen that determines individual’s blood group
- Function in gas exchange
- A.k.a. Erythrocytes

What are white blood cells?
A
- Cells of the immune system
- Function in defending the body against foreign substances
- Two types: Agranulocytes (e.g. Lymphocytes) and Granulocytes (e.g. Eosinophils)
- A.k.a. Leukocytes

- Cytoplasmic fragments of the Megakaryocyte
- Function in blood coagulation
