‘Ilm Mustalah al-Hadith (classification of hadith)
- Knowledge of principles and rules to accept or reject hadith after evaluating its isnad and matn (text)
- This knowledge is used to make distinction between authentic and weak reports
- Refers to technical terms, names and phrases developed by hadith scholars overtime
- Riwaya and Diraaya
Riwaaya
Process of hadith transmission by relating traditions and conveying them through time
Diraaya
Principles and rules governing the process of hadith transmission including the rules of transmission, titles, qualifications, etc.

Khabar (report or news)
3 meanings;
- Prophet SWS’s sayings, deeds, tacit approval, and description of features
- used to designate any report from anyone other than the prophet SWS
- Comprehensively refers to traditions about the Prophet SWS or others
Athar
- Synonym of hadith; anything about or from the Prophet SWS
2. Sometimes used to designate traditions about the Companions or the Successors
Musnad
- Uninterrupted chain of authorities going back to the Prophet SWS via a companion!
- Also refers to hadith whose content is arranged in groups according to original narrator
Musnid
-person who narrates a tradition by tracing it back to the Prophet SWS through a chain.
Hait
-One whose knowledge embraces both the text and the allegation of authority of 100,000 traditions
Hujja
-One whose knowledge embraces 300,000 hadith
Hujja
-One whose knowledge embraces 300,000 hadith
Al-Hakim
One who has committed to memory all reported hadith on record together with their isnad in all the sahih and hasan and da’if categories
