habituation Flashcards
describe iatrogenic hypoglycaemia
limiting factor in glycaemia control
impairs defenses against subsequnt hypoglycameia and thus causes recurrence of hypos
patients are less aware the more they happen (IAH)
due to intensive therapy to tx hyperglycaemia
what happens in IAH
reduced neuroendocrine response to recurrent hypos
threshold glucose level for eliciting a counterregulatory response is lowered
increases risk of severe hypo
what is habituation?
reduction of psychological behavioural response or physiological response to a stimulus as a result of repeated prolonged exposure
what are the criteria for habituation?
repeated stimuli decreases response
if stimulus withheld repsonse recovers
succesively more rapid
the more rapid/ the more pronounced
the weaker the stimulus the more pronounced
effects may proceed beyond zero/asymptotic level
exhibits generalisation to other stimuli (sympathoadrenal repsonse)
other strong stimuli can cause dishabituation (must be novel and acute - exercise)
habituation of dishabituation can occur
