Habitat Terms and Attachment Styles Flashcards
Epilimnion
Top layer of the waterbody
Metalimnion
Middle layer of waterbody
Hypolimnion
Bottom layer of waterbody
What’s the photic zone?
Area where photosynthesis can occur in the waterbody
Where is the photic zone?
In the epilimnion.
What’s the aphotic zone?
Area where photosynthesis cannot occur.
Where is the aphotic zone?
It’s both the metalimnion and hypolimnion.
What’s the 1% rule?
Only 1% of light will go through the aphotic zone.
Trophogenic
The photosynthetic rate is higher than the respiration rate.
Tropholytic
The respiration rate is higher than the photosynthetic rate.
What are heterotrophs?
Organisms that eat something externally to gain nutrients.
What are mixotrophs?
Organisms that utilize different sources of energy for nutrition.
What’s lotic?
Running waters.
What’s lentic?
Still waters.
What’s the littoral zone?
The area near the shore. It’s the transition zone between land and water.
What’s the riparian area?
Land occurring along the edges of a water body.
What does “riffles” mean?
It’s the term for fast going water.
What does “runs” mean?
It’s the term for slow going water.
What does “isolated” mean?
It’s the term for a river pool.
What does “thalweg” mean?
It’s the term for the lowest elevation in a river; often is fast flowing.
Plankton
Organisms suspended and passively drifting in the water column.
Periphyton
Algae attached to surfaces
Tychoplankton
Secondarily entrained in the water column
Metaphyton
Algae that isn’t attached but associated in the littoral zone.
