Cyanobacteria Biodiversity (Genus) Flashcards
Dolichospermum CHARACTERISTICS
Microscopic, filamentous.
Dolichospermum COLOR
Dark green, dark brown. or pale blue green.
Dolichospermum MORPHOLOGY
Spherical/Oval/Barrel shaped cells, HAS heterocytes and akinetes, SHEATH with fine clear mucilage envelope, trichomes solitary or clustered.
Dolichospermum HABITATS
Freshwater lakes/ponds, planktic and rarely metaphytic.
Dolichospermum FUN FACT
Produces microcystin; creates algal blooms.
Gloeotrichia CHARACTERISTICS/COLORS
Olive green, yellow green, brown, dark blue, or blackish.
Gloeotrichia MORPHOLOGY
HAS heterocytes and akinetes, HAS aerotopes. Heteropolar trichomes w/ intercalary heterocytes, rarely false branches.
Gloeotrichia HABITATS
Freshwater ONLY, planktonic.
Gloeotrichia FUN FACT
Water manager, produces microcystin.
Aphanothece CHARACTERISTIC/COLORS
Yellow or green, stores glycogen, cell wall has thick layer of peptioglycogen.
Aphanothece MORPHOLOGY
No flagella, flatten cells, mucilage forms amorphous colonies.
Aphanothece HABITATS
Benthic in standing water, usually becomes floating mats.
Aphanothece FUN FACT
Considered sediment mats if formed in the bottom of waterbodies, forms toxic blooms.
Aphanizomenon CHARACTERISTICS/COLOR
Possibly has firm sheaths, pale blue green or blue green.
Aphanizomenon MORPHOLOGY
Straight & unbranched trichomes, HAS heterocytes (intercalary) & akinetes (between vegatative cells), HAS aerotropes.
Aphanizomenon HABITATS
Found in freshwater lakes.
