The people protect Jonathan from being put to death for tasting the honey forbidden by Saul. “Shall Jonathan, who has wrought this great salvation in Israel, die? Far be it. As the Lord lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.”

Witch of Endor- Saul goes to her to speak with Shmuel’s ghost, and learns he is soon to die in battle with Jonathan.

Athaliah, mother of Ahaziah. Rules Judah for 6 years after Ahaziah dies.
בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם, אֵין מֶלֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל: אִישׁ הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָיו, יַעֲשֶׂה
In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Leads into the Book of Samuel and the people’s desire to have a King. The period of the Judges was not always good becuase there was not steady leadership

After Saul curses anyone in his army who will eat that day, Jonathan eats the honey from a beehive

Between her legs he kneeled, dropped and slept Line in Deborah’s victory song about how Yael killed Sisera when he was sleeping. Probably after the two had sex.

Joshua says this so Israel would have more sunlight to do battle.

Steward of the palace to King Ahab. He hides prophets of the God of Israel in caves to protect them.
לְכוּ וְנֵלְכָה הַגִּלְגָּל וּנְחַדֵּשׁ שָׁם הַמְּלוּכָה
Shmuel to the people, inviting them to establish Saul as king- “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew there the kingdom.”
Shomron
Omri buys the hill of Samaria (Shomron), this is where the house of Obri rules from in Northern Israel
וְחָרָשׁ לֹא יִמָּצֵא בְּכֹל אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל
The Philistines restricted access to Iron age tech, and Israel was not able to arm themselves to match their enemy. - “No smith could be found in all of Israel”
The stones at Gilgal
The stones mark each tribe’s crossing of the Jordan into the land Joshuah 4:12. Stones at the feet of the priests. One person from every tribe picks up a stone and brings it back to their tribe as a testmant to how wonderful God is. That night, Israel camps at Gilgal, the Eastern border of Jericho. Joshuah takes the stones and sets up a monument. He says the stones represent the crossing of the Jordan, he invokes the crossing of the red sea.
Ah’av
Son of Omri, he is led astray by his pagan wife Jezebel. He is known as a bad king because of idolatry. Died in battle against the Assyrians when he was hit by a stray arrow.

Amalakite king- Saul initially spares him despite being ordered to kill him.

Travels to King Solomon and is totally impressed by his wisdom and wealth.

Son of King David & Bathsheva. Becomes King of Israel.
וַיִּתֵּן לִפְנֵיהֶם וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיּוֹתִרוּ כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה
20 loaves of barley bread miracously feed 100 men. There are even leftovers (יותרו)

2 mothers arguing before King Solomon. One mother says don’t kill the child, the other mother says “it won’t be mine and it won’t be yours. Cut him!”

Naaman, commander of the army of Aram, asks Elisha to cure his leprosy. Elisha tells him to dunk in the Jordan 7 times. Naaman responds with this line. אמהנ - river in Damascus פרפר - river in Damascus

Elisha takes Elija’s cloak and parts the water אַיֵּה -where. Demonstrates that Elisha has inherited the mantle from Elijah.

What editorial viewpoint emerges from the inclusion of the last two stories, that of Micah’s priest and the rape of the concubine at Gilbeah?
The way in which worship of God is being practiced is flawed, and a lack of central leadership (political and religious) leads to barbarism and potentially pagan religious practices.

What is the Narrator’s point of view about Saul’s character, David’s character, David’s rise to power, and the conflict between Saul and David?
The narrator assumes that Saul is paranoid, David is noble and nigh perfect as a man and future king, David’s rise to power comes justly and without any attempt to grab power on David’s part, and that in all ways David is in the right in his conflict with Saul.
- In what ways is Joshua depicted as being “like Moses”?
*He sends out spies to scout the land (chpt 2)
*Joshua leads people on a miraculous crossing, causing the waters of the Jordan River to stand still “while all of Israel crossed over on dry land”(3:17)
*Encounters the “captain of the Lord’s army (Ch 7) who tells Joshua exactly what God said to Moses at the burning bush “Take your shoes from off your feet , for the place that you are standing is holy ground.” (Exod. 3.5, Josh 5:15)
*Able to work miracles. He prays to God for more daylight when fighting the Amorites, the sun stops mid day.

What generalizations about this period and type of leadership emerge from the Book as a whole?
leaders are charismatic, temporary, non-dynastic, and non-normative (they do not act as a the Deuteronomic religious system says they should)

Political Reason- they rebelled agaisnt Babylon. Religious Reason– Menashe was a bad king and worshipped Baal

Joshua asking an angel - are you friend or foe? In modern day Israel, this phrase means “who’s side are you on?”

What is the narrator’s view of King David in the “Court History” of II Samuel? How does this differ from the narrator’s view of David’s ascent to the throne in I Samuel?
David is comparatively flawed- we see a much more balanced depiction of David’s court, warts and all.
וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל-גָּד, צַר-לִי מְאֹד; נִפְּלָה-נָּא בְיַד-ה’’ כִּי-רַבִּים רַחֲמָו, וּבְיַד-אָדָם אַל-אֶפֹּלָה.
David sins by counting the people of Israel. He repents. Gad comes and tells David that he should choose between three punishments: A seven year famine in the land, hiding from his enemies for three months, or three days of pestilence in the land. David responds with this line - asking God to decide the punishment.

Parents of Sampson. Angel visits Manoah’s wife and tells her that she will have a son who will be special. Manoah wants to see the angel himself, but when he does he is afraid that they are going to die.

God to Eli- Describing how He will raise Shmuel up to take the place of Eli’s sons. “I shall raise up for Myself a faithful priest, who will do as is in My heart and in My mind, and I shall build for him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed all of the days.”
שִֹימָה לָּנוּ מֶלֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵנוּ כְּכָל הַגּוֹיִם
the Israelite call for a king- “set up for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
אִם-הַיּוֹם תִּהְיֶה-עֶבֶד לָעָם הַזֶּה וַעֲבַדְתָּם, וַעֲנִיתָם, וְדִבַּרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם דְּבָרִים טוֹבִים–וְהָיוּ לְךָ עֲבָדִים, כָּל-הַיָּמִים
Advise of the elders to Rehoboam to lighten the burden on the people so that they will stay loyal…He doesn’t listen to them.

Yael says this to Barak. Barak asks to see Sisera, and Yael shows Barak Sisera’s corpse.
פְּלִשְׁתִּים עָלֶיךָ שִׁמְשׁוֹן
Delilah testing Samson to see if he really told her the secret to his strength
הֲכֶלֶב אָנֹכִי כִּי אַתָּה בָא אֵלַי בַּמַּקְלוֹת
Goliath to David, expressing his contempt for David. “Am I a dog for you to come at me with sticks?”

The circumcision of Israel was necessary after the incident with the spies, the next 40 years saw
all of the men finally die off, and apparently no circumcision was carried out in the desert during
that time. Israel was finally circumcised in preparation for the battle of Jericho.

A messenger from the king of Assyria to King Hezekiah. He sat near a wall of Jerusalem and tells Jerusalemites to surrender. They are silent in response.

Righteous King of Judah. Sepearates donations - all sacred donations go towards temple repair, sin and guilt offerings go to the priests.
וְנָתַתָּ לְעַבְדְּךָ לֵב שֹׁמֵעַ לִשְׁפֹּט אֶת עַמְּךָ לְהָבִין בֵּין טוֹב לְרָע
Solomon’s prayer to God. He asks for wisdom.
וַיִּקַּח אֶת בְּנוֹ הַבְּכוֹר אֲשֶׁר יִמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ עֹלָה עַל הַחֹמָה
Mesha, the king of Moab, sacrifices his first born son in order to save his kingdom. על החמה - on the wall
מַה-נִּכְבַּד הַיּוֹם מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר נִגְלָה הַיּוֹם לְעֵינֵי אַמְהוֹת עֲבָדָיו, כְּהִגָּלוֹת נִגְלוֹת אַחַד הָרֵקִים.
Michal says this to King David after he brings the tabernacle into the city of David & throws a party for the whole city. David never sleeps with her again.
Sisera
Captain of King Jabin’s Army. After fleeing from Barak and the Israelite army, he is killed by Yael who seduced him.
כִּי הָאָדָם יִרְאֶה לַעֵינַיִם וַיהֹוָה יִרְאֶה לַלֵּבָב
God to Samuel, regarding David. David may not be impressive in appearance, but God sees his heart and finds him worthy of the crown. – “For man sees what is visible to his eyes, but God sees into the heart.”
מַה-לִּי וְלָכֶם בְּנֵי צְרֻיָה
David talking to the sons of Zeruiah. The sons say to kill Shimei ben Gera because he is insulting David. David responds “whats it to you?”
בת שבע
Wife of Uriah. David sleeps with her, and then sends his husband into battle to be killed. She gives birth to King Solomon.
