Open stairs are?
one or both sides open to room
closed stairs are?
enclosed to both sides of the room
What is the balustrade?
Whole assembly of balusters, newel post, hand rail etc..
How much clearance must be form handrail too wall?
2 inches
Can a newel post be inside minimum stairway width?
yes as long as it does not exceed 100mm (4”)
Where is the angle Newel placed?
at the turn of the stairs (landing)
where is the starting newel placed?
the bottom of the stairs
where is the landing newel placed?
the top of the stairs
what are Combination stairs?
Stairs open at the bottom and closed (with a door) at the top
How many landings does a wide U have?
2 landings
How many steps down to landing are there in a Long L?
2 or 3 steps (top or bottom that turn 90 degrees to main flight)
What is a Wide L?
2 full flights of stairs connected to landing positioned at 90 degrees
What is a Narrow U?
2 full flights of stairs connected to landing in full opposite directions (180 degrees)
What is a Wide U?
3 flights of stairs, 2 landings (same as double L except 2-3 steps between Landings)
What is a Double L?
3 flights of stairs, 2 landings (same as Wide U except full flight of stairs between landings)
What is a winder?
stairs with tapered treads at 30-45 degrees
how many sets of winders can there be between each floor level?
Only one set and they cannot exceed a 90 degree turn
What is a landing?
a platform between two flights of stairs used to break the the total rise into two smaller rises and to change the direction of the stair case
What is the “maximum” rise of a single flight of stairs by code?
3.7m (if the total rise exceeds this, there must be a landing)
What is the minimum effective depth on a stringer?
90mm
