FSH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone, which stimulates oestrogen production and the growth of follicles (egg-sacs) in the ovary. It is secreted by the pituitary gland.
Embryo
The developing human offspring inside the womb.
Gametes
The sex cells-sperm in males, ova (eggs) in females.
In vitro fertilisation
Fertilisation outside the womb. “In vitro” means in a test tube (or glass dish).
LH
Luteinising Hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland, which stimulates ovulation.
Oestrogen
Female hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Ovaries
A pair of organs in the female reproductive system where ova (eggs) are produced.
Ovary
One of the two reproductive organs (ovaries) which produce eggs (ova) and sex hormones.
Progesterone
Female hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Sexual reproduction
Reproducing which involves the fusing of male and female gametes to form genetically unique daughter cells.
Testosterone
The main male sex hormone, secreted in the testes.
Uterus
Aka womb - this is where the fertilised ovum develops.
Womb
The organ in females in which babies are conceived and carried. Also called the uterus.
Zygote
A fertilised egg, resulting from the union of two gametes.
