Gustation and olfactory Flashcards
what is gustation and olfactory
Taste and smell
olfactory epithelium
This is the area in nostril
cibriform plate
seperates the brain from the olfactory epithelium. Has holes that allows the information to flow through
olfactory bulb
a bundle of nerves that sends little projection through cribiform plate into the olfactory epithelium, which branch off. They have specific type of one receptor.
Steps in processing the information coming in
- Epithelial cells have different types of receptor
- specific cells bind to different receptor
- causes AP
- Fire to one olfactory buld - glomerous
- synapeses as a mitral/tufted cell
- Binds to the G protein
- causes a cascade event to take place.
Pheromones
mostly for animals due to the vomeronasal systema nd the accessory olfactory bulb they have. This allwos them to sense a chemical signal released by annother animal. Humans dont have this strongly because they do not have the olfactory accessory bulb.
Which type of receptor or channel for the 5 taste
Sweet, bitter, and unami –> G protein
Salty and sour –> ion channels.
