What happened?

A
  • Robert Catesby + group of Catholics wanted to blow up parliament and kill James -> put his daughter Elizabeth on the throne.
  • Sir Francis Tresham persuaded brother in law Monteagie not to go to house of parliament on November 5th.
  • Monteagie took letter to Earl of Salisbury.
    -> Lord Chamberlain searched the cellars.
  • When Guido Fawkes was found he wasn’t arrested so the other plotters went ahead and when cellars were searched again and Fawkes was then arrested.
  • He was hung, drawn and quatered.
  • It failed because the Cahtolics seld themselves out.

  • Francis Tresham arrested and died.
  • 8 plotters found & put on trail in Jan 1606.
    -> found guilty & hanged, drawn and quatered.

  • Legislations passed against Catholics.
  • Recusants could have 2/3 of their property confiscated.
  • Not many Catholics were killed -> population rose to 50,000 by 1625.
