How does thrush present?
- thick, white discharge (cottage cheese) that does not usually smell
- may be asymptomatic
- vaginal or vulval itching, irritation and discomfort
What investigations should be performed for thrush?
pH <4.5
Charcoal swab with microscopy
How does chlamydia present in women?
Purulent discharge and intermenstrual/post-coital vaginal bleeding
May be asymptomatic
Pelvic pain
Dyspareunia
Dysuria
How does chlamydia present in men?
Dysuria
Reactive arthritis
Epididymo-orchitis
Urethral discharge or discomfort
What investigations should be performed for chlamydia?
NAAT
How does bacterial vaginosis present?
Fishy smelling, watery grey or white discharge
May be asymptomatic
No itching, irritation or pain
What investigations should be performed for bacterial vaginosis?
Vaginal pH >4.5
Charcoal vaginal swabs - clue cells on microscopy
How does trichomonas vaginalis present?
Frothy, yellow-green discharge, may have a fishy smell
May be asymptomatic
Itching
Dysuria
Dyspareunia
Strawberry cervix
Balanitis in men
What investigations should be performed for trichomonas vaginalis?
Charcoal swab
First-catch urine in men
Self-performed low vaginal swab in women
pH >4.5
How does gonorrhoea present?
Odourless, purulent green/yellow discharge
More likely to be symptomatic than chlamydia
Dysuria
Pelvic/testicular pain
Rectal infection
Pharyngeal infection
Conjunctivitis
Prostatitis
What investigations should be performed for gonorrhoea?
NAAT
Charcoal swabs
How does genital herpes present?
May have an unusual vaginal discharge
May be asymptomatic
Can develop symptoms months/years after initial infection
Usually symptoms appear within 2 weeks of exposure
Ulcers/blistering lesions around the area
Neuropathic-type pain
Flu-like symptoms
Dysuria
Inguinal lymphadenopathy
Recurrent episodes
