Guilt/morality Quotes Flashcards
A1S4- Macbeth - morality
“Stars, hide your fires, // Let not light see my black and deep desires”
This metaphor suggests that Macbeth want to hide his want to become king because he knows that the only way that could make him a king is to murder Duncan. As we know, Macbeth is a loyal person, he will not going to kill his king. “Star” and “Fires” refer to light- which is represent for hope, “hide your fires” also means that “turn off your hope”
A1S7-Macbeth - guilt
“Bloody instructions, which being taught, return// To plague th’ inventor”
He avoid to use the word “kill” this can suggests he is feeling guilty more when he use that word. Macbeth knows that their guilt will comes back and haunt them but he still murdered Duncan despite the fact that there’s no way he could handle his guilt , this suggests how large his ambition is
A2S2-Macbeth- theme of guilty
“Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood//Clean from my hand?”
Hyperbole is used to emphasises his sin, even a huge amount of water can’t clean the guilt he created because king is represented for god. This quote suggest Macbeth’s lack of morality because he is hoping for something to rinse the blood off just like he want to taking off his responsibility of the king’s death.
A2S2- Lady Macbeth
“My hands are of your colour, but // I shame to wear a heart so white”
It seems like she has no problem with the colour of blood in her hand, which suggest she’s not scares of sharing Macbeth’s guilt. Therefore, she might not realises that she is the drive force- who persuaded Macbeth to kills Duncan and she thought she’s not guilty much and that’s why she said “shame to wear a heart so white”. This can also suggest she’s has lack of morality because how could she’s not feeling any guilty and shame at all when she support the murderer of who is represents for god
