Ambition Quotes Flashcards
“And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you
Have done to this.” - A1S7
The quote reveals how truly manipulative and determined Lady Macbeth is, as it is referring to how she would treat her baby if she had sworn to smash its brain like Macbeth had sworn to kill Duncan. This quote acknowledges Lady Macbeth’s ruthlessness and her dedication to her ambition; willing to do anything to make sure Macbeth becomes king, even if it meant manipulating and deluding her own husband. Shakespeare characterize Lady Macbeth as merciless and shrewd to partially subvert gender stereotypes, as well as explore a new type of female characteristics.
“Unsex me here” A1S5
The quote refers to Lady Macbeth’s wish to not be a woman, as it restricts her from killing Duncan herself, based on the limitations placed on her gender. Her ambition for power is strong, but due to those restrictions, she can only support Macbeth in his rise to power. Shakespeare does this to create a female character who is more cunning than the male lead, ultimately attracting the immediate audience, and would also be enticing for modern day audience, as it goes against gender stereotypes.
“Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be
What thou art promised.” -A1S5
The quote implies that whilst reading her husband’s letter, Lady Macbeth is already set on the pursuit of power, and nothing can stop her from achieving her ambitions. This is also a nod to the Jacobean beliefs; Lady Macbeth completely believing in the prophecy without a doubt, a reference to the supernatural theme. Her choice of word, “shalt” creates a certainty that Macbeth will become king, as if it’s guaranteed by fate or destiny.
