clinical manifestations of GBS
weakness/tingling in lower extremeties ascending or descending patterns severity of symptoms increase over hours or weeks uncoordinated movements numbness and decreased sensation loss of bowel/bladder control blurred vision difficulty breathing, swallowing and chewing
when in GBS life threatening
when it effects the respiratory muscles
GBS pharmacology
no known cure
steroid therapy
high dose immunoglobulin therapy to shorten the severity and duration
what is the goal of pharm therapy in GBS
reduce severity and accelerate recovery
prognosis of GBS
95% survival
73% complete recovery
25-50% residual weakness after 3 yrs
about 3% may suffer relapse of muscle weakness and tingling many years post initial attack
